Map Project

For this project I created a map of my experience in the Grinstead Building at the University of Central Missouri. Because I am a Graphic Art major, a photography minor, and my emphasis area is graphic design I spend a lot of my time in this building. I started by scanning in a map of Grinstead so all the classroom sizes would be proportionate to one another. To better organize all of the information, I color coded the years that I took the classes and designated the floors by stroke weight. The registration marks represent Graphic Art, the cameras represent Photography, and the pencils represent Graphic Design. I chose the colors because they are a printers process colors and I think it really is all tied together with those colors.

Overall, I found this project to be really fun but also very challenging because keeping that much information organized and interesting at the same time was no easy task.

Poster Assignment

For this assignment we created a poster that raised awareness of the need for better nutrition in this country. I focused on how the rising obesity rates are also causing a rise in the Type II Diabetes rates. This is a huge problem because Type II Diabetes is a serious disease that in most cases can be prevented by better eating and exercising habits. I used the blue circle because it is the universal symbol for diabetes and also makes the shape of the letter "o" for obesity. The poster is filled with both haunting and educational statistics and at the end it says "don't be a statistic".

Illustration Project

For this project I chose to focus on a trip I took to California my senior year in high school. This trip was very life-changing for me for many reasons. I was able to go to Anaheim, California for ten days, completely free because I qualified in an event for FBLA. I won first place at State, thus moving on to the national competition. I competed against 100 other people (two from each state) and received 8th place in the nation. I had proved to myself that anything was possible. I had done something that I never in a million years I imagined I would. I was just thankful that I qualified and was able to attend the national conference. I never dreamed I would actually place in the top ten. In addition, I got to see all of the sights, Disneyland, Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Catalina Island, and so much more. My life was changed in California and I cannot wait to be there again someday.

I used water colors on bristol board, and I inked around the letters and objects throughout the design. I had never used watercolors before, and it was an interesting experience. It was a lot of work and proved to be challenging in the small areas of the design, but I love it and I think all the colors turned out really great. It clearly depicts my trip through its bright colors and the happiness that it displays. I will treasure my memories of that trip and this design forever.

Typography Assignment

For this hand lettering assignment I chose to make all the letters lowercase except for the letters POP, because I think that when typography is used effectively it can really make designs "pop" so to speak. This assignment was challenging for me, and I really wanted to use the computer to better see how the letters related to one another, but with a little encouragement from Mrs. Watson I decided that I could in fact see the relationships between the letters on my own and I am very satisfied with the way it turned out.

Alternative Typography

Envelope, Letterhead, and Business Card

After a lot of experimenting and trying different layouts and colors I came to my final design. I think it balances well with my logo and the company name. Each document has similarities but is also unique in it's own way.

Logo Assignment

This is the finished inked image of my logo for my photography business. I came to this design after over 50 different sketches. I think it is simplistic and elegant and accomplishes what I want my business to convey.

My Third Portrait Photography Assignment

For my third Portrait Photography assignment we had to create an image using the new LED studio lights that we got. We had to experiment with different angles of the light, and how it effected the shape of the face.

Realistic/Symbol Assignment

For our second project in Intro to Graphic Design and Illustration we created a realistic pencil sketch of a three-dimensional object and then from that created an inked logo of the same object.

This project was challenging for me because I have never taken a drawing class, but I feel that I learned a lot about drawing and about myself, creating this artwork. Overall, I am very happy with the way it turned out.

My Second Portrait Photography Assignment

For my second portrait photography assignment we had to create an image using indoor north window light. I photographed my beautiful grandma quilting in a room in her house.

Vertigo Designs by April Greiman

This is what I based my artwork off of.
They are identity, business cards, hang tags, and postcards
for a business in California called Vertigo.

Digital Re-Creation of April Greiman's Artwork

For our first project in intro to Graphic Design and Illustration we had to research and recreate the artwork of a famous graphic designer. I chose April Greiman, mainly because she was one of the first people to design on the computer and really opened a lot of designers' eyes to the vast potential of the digital world.

My artwork is based off of her line of business cards and cards for the company Vertigo. Instead of using the name Vertigo I used Greiman's name and surrounded it with geometric shapes and characteristics about her.

My First Portrait Photography Assignment

This semester I am taking Portrait Photography with Professor Hurst.

For our first assignment we had to take an outdoor portrait.

I took pictures of a fellow classmate Amber Closterman.

The shoot was a blast and we got a lot of great pictures out of it.

This is one of my favorites.
